Quitman, home of the historic and much photographed
Wood County Court House, is located 5 miles south of Lake Fork at the
intersection of State Highways 37 and 154. Quitman was founded in 1850.
It is home to Wood County Electric Cooperative, Peoples Telephone and
East Texas Medical Center of Quitman, three of the areas largest
employers. Quitman offers numerous annual entertainment events,
including the Dogwood Festival, the Spring Swing Festival, Old Settlers
Reunion and Christmas in the Park. With other events, such as the annual
Golf and Volley-Ball Tournaments, monthly Bluegrass Shows, frequent
performances by the Quitman Community Theater, and the Pilot Club’ s
Annual Chili Cook-Off and Annual Christmas Extravaganza, you can always
find something to do. The many recreational activities, excellent
schools, and friendly churches provide the current population of about
2,500 citizens a well-rounded community. When visiting Lake Fork, you
don’ t have to look far to enjoy the best of shopping, dining and
medical care.
