Welcome to Alba . . .
The
Little City with a Big Heart! The town of Alba has a history that goes
back to 1841, when Joseph Simpkins, a gunsmith, settled with his family.
By 1881 the MK&T railroad came through and the following year the Town
site was laid out. By 1884, the population grew rapidly. The town
incorporated in July 1909. Lignite coal was discovered in the area
around the turn of the century and by 1911 mines were producing 20,000
tons of coal per month. With this increase in the economy Alba grew to
nearly 1500 people. By the late 1920’ s a record high population of
nearly 2000 was reported. The great Depression and the closing of the
mines in 1940 dealt a severe blow to the community and the population
declined to what it is today. However, the creation of Lake Fork
Reservoir and the case of transportation on US 69 are providing an
incentive for the economic opportunity and development again in the
community of Alba. Alba is a great little quiet country town, located
just 80 miles east of the DFW metroplex, 90 miles west of Shreveport, LA
and on the shores of Lake Fork, the premier bass fishing lake in the
nation, also know for catfish & crappie. Alba offers a variety of
opportunities for business, weekend getaways, sport fishing and much
more. Alba has a historic downtown square area well suited for community
gatherings and festivals.
